I got it from the local library. Here is my first impression on the book.
Title: Java for dummies – Quick Reference
Author: Doug Lowe
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, NJ
About the book:
This book claims that it is a good material to verify the syntax. It also gives a note that it may not be a complete reference.
This books covers the following area of interests
- Java language & tools
- Java Language basics
- Basic Java classes
- File & Network I/O
- Swing

My note:
I looked at chapters 1, 2, 3 & 4. I avoided Swing since that is not my area of specialization. The four chapters gives very very basic information. The chapter two doesn’t have coherent way of explaining things. While explaining about operators, it talks about anonymous class, which is followed by arrays.
Network API is not so important than JDBC API for an application developer.Unfortunately the JDBC API is totally left out in this book.
Even the basic concepts like inheritance is not explained fully. The rule for return types and raising exceptions while overriding are not given (or I coudln’t see them)
Finally, it may be very quick and basic reference which is not self sufficient within its own scope.
